Best Types of Cabinet Doors

When it comes to cabinet doors, there are so many types, styles, and placements to choose from. Here are the best types of cabinet doors for your next renovation or build!

For the most part, there are two simple ways that cabinets can sit: overlay and inset. Overlay cabinet doors are set over the cabinet face frame and have a more traditional look. Inset cabinet doors are set inside the frame, giving the cabinets a sleek, clean look. While both options have their own pros and cons (and very different looks), there are also many types of cabinet doors to choose from!

Types of Cabinet Doors

1. Shaker Cabinets

Shaker cabinets are one of the most popular types of cabinet doors and are a timeless style option. These cabinet doors are made up of a flat, recessed center panel and an overlayed frame around the edge. The style tends to be minimal, while still adding so much character to kitchens. This type of cabinet door works really well with just about any style of home!

2. Traditional Raised Panel

Raised panel cabinets are a much more traditional style of cabinet doors. Similar to shaker-style cabinets, these cabinets have a center panel and an outer panel. However, with raised panel cabinets the center panels are raised and sloped back to the outer panel. The outer panel is also raised.

This type of cabinet offers so many variations! From the traditional square raised style to arched, double-arched, and cathedral, the options are limitless.

3. Slab Cabinets

Slab cabinet doors are exactly what they sound like: a flat door from edge to edge. This type of cabinet door can give a home a modern look and keeps things very minimal. However, there are several ways to add decorative elements to slab doors and change the look and style quite a bit!

Slab doors are commonly flat, but they can also be wood-paneled for a different look. Another option is to texture the door! While decorative slab options tend to be more expensive than classic slab doors, it’s important to know that these styles exist when choosing your cabinet doors.

4. Glass Cabinets (Open Frame)

Open-frame glass cabinet doors are a wonderful option for displaying beautiful dishes and keeping an open feel in your kitchen. This type of door can lend to many different types of kitchen styles, making it versatile and the perfect option for so many.

Would you rather hide your dishes? The glass in your cabinets can also be textured, leaded, beveled, or frosted.

5. Mullion Cabinets

Similar to open-frame glass cabinets, mullion cabinets also contain glass. However, mullion doors have dividers (usually made from wood) to separate the glass into a pattern. Oftentimes, this is a grid, like a glass pane window. But the beauty of mullion is that it can be made into other amazing patterns, such as diamond, vertical, curved or rounded, gothic, prairie, and so many others. These types of cabinet doors can also be frosted or textured to hide what’s behind them!

6. Beadboard

Beadboard cabinet doors are essentially made up of tongue-and-groove style wood panels. This is often done in the center panel of a shaker-style cabinet door, but can also be created on slab cabinets. Beadboard cabinets are perfect for farmhouse, country, or cottage-style homes!
