Range Hood Over the Stove – Do I Really Need One?

Aside from making a kitchen look beautiful, a range hood over the stove actually serves really important purposes: ventilation, recirculating the air, eliminating odors, and removing moisture. But do you really need a range hood over your stove?

While it’s definitely not a requirement, it’s important to consider where your range is located and the layout of your kitchen in your home. If you are cooking in an open environment, such as your kitchen island, then a range hood may not be as beneficial since there is natural ventilation to a certain extent. If your range is located by the wall, then it may be worth it to keep a clean environment.

Another thing to consider is how a range hood can add additional lighting if your stove is against a wall or darker location. And of course, as we all know, it adds a beautiful element to your kitchen design!

Q&A

Where does a range hood vent?

Ductless range hoods vent to the outside air, while ducted range hoods purify and recirculate the air back into the home.

Ducted or ductless range hood?

Ducted Hoods: Found in many commercial kitchens, ducted hoods are efficient at removing toxins, humidity, and steam by venting to the outside air. One of the downsides is that they have to be installed in an area where the duct work can actually go outside, limiting where your range can be installed.

Ductless Hods: Ductless range hoods work by purifying and recirculating air back into the home. They tend to be a bit more convenient since they can be installed anywhere. However, they also tend to be a tad louder than ducted hoods. Additionally, ducted hoods are better at removing humidity than ductless hoods since going ductless means recirculating the air. Ultimately, it’s important to consider your home and kitchen layout (as well as budget) before deciding on a ducted or ductless hood!

Do I need an electrician to install a range hood?

Most range hoods come with a three-pronged plug, so it’s unlikely that you would need an electrician to install a range hood. If you are needing electricity run to the area, then you may need to hire an electrician to complete that project. Ultimately, you can install a range hood yourself or hire a contractor or builder to do the job.

How to Build a DIY Farmhouse Vent Cover

While it may take a bit of time and energy, you can definitely build your own DIY farmhouse vent cover (or range hood). In general, here is how to build a farmhouse range hood cover:

  1. Gather your supplies.
  2. Draw and measure your range hood.
  3. Calculate angles.
  4. Start by building the bottom.
  5. Work your way up.
  6. Place the cover over the vent and secure to the wall.

Tip: If staining the wood, stain it before you put the vent cover together. If painting, paint after it is built.
